Mitral valve area decreased by a mean of 17% immediately postoperatively and increased slightly at the 6-month follow-up. Mean peak velocity decreased by a mean of 10% immediately postoperatively and returned to baseline by the 6-month follow-up. Patients with rheumatic disease and endocarditis had equivalent decreases in mitral valve area, although the mitral valve area was decreased to a greater extent in those patients undergoing VVT (preoperative, intraoperative, and immediately postoperative).
